Works by Klaus Lichtenegger

Klaus Lichtenegger is a self-proclaimed “Materialist.” He claims this title with the support of his background in mechanical engineering, love for design, and most importantly, craftsman’s respect for the materials he uses. Primarily working in wood, leather, and metal, Lichtenegger produces hand-crafted pieces that challenge the preconceived notions of the one-to-one relationship between material and function. For example, Surface is a stool composed of an array of bongossi wood poles, bundled and polished to create a deceptively comfortable seat. “303” re-imagines the simple metal frame of a lawn chair to generate a new structural form for a lounge chair, made stylish with tanned leather. For Lichtenegger, each material yields an infinite field of possibilities, all of which are supported by a love for craft itself.
