A company that uses waste wool to make sustainable products and furniture.
Based in a northern area of the Netherlands, Weved is a wool and natural woven manufacturer that aims to fill in a gap in the Dutch industrial wool production. Founder and textile artist Claudy Jongstra works alongside Stefan Koper to both rejuvenate and reinvent the local wool industry. And Weved does this in a sustainable, environmentally conscious way. The company collaborates with different designers to create products and furniture from waste wool.
In the Netherlands, around 1.5 million kilograms of wool are discarded as an unwanted by-product of dairy farming. Weved sources some of that wool to produce a beautifully woven fabric and then use the textile to make sustainable, eco-friendly products. Weved collaborates with Irish company Donegal Yarns to transform the wool into yarn. For the first products, launched at Salone del Mobile, the brand also collaborated with Studio Claudy Jongstra for the natural dyeing process and with artisan weaving mill Ter Kuile.
Design firms Re—gained and Studio Floris Schoonderbeek created the two products, Lounge Chair 01 and Table Tarpo 01, respectively. The lounge chair is timeless and elegant as well as practical. It offers ultimate comfort but also folds to move with ease from a living room to a terrace or balcony. The chair features a reclaimed solid wood frame and a wool seat and backrest. Table Tarpo 01 combines a picnic table with a wool tarp. Both versatile and convenient, it provides an ideal solution to create a shaded space outdoors. Weved introduced the two designs at this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan, which took place between June 7 and June 12, 2022. Photographs © Weved.
