Temporary Wedding Pavillion by DUS Architects

I had a classmate who did her architecture design thesis on crochet and its implicit architectural typologies. I was a skeptic at the time, and so I must admit my surprise at DUS Architects Amsterdam’s Wedding Chapel in Den Haag. Commissioned by Villa Escamp, the temporary chapel takes the form of a dome, and despite the whimsical look of the crocheted ventilation tubing, the construction offers a unique study in scale, structure, and porosity. The flexibility and ribbing of the ventilation tubing lend itself to the craft, and the life-sized implementation of the crochet technique is undoubtedly impressive. The six-meter diameter of the chapel accommodates an intimate wedding of fifty guests, and the translucency of the tubes themselves as well as the natural gaps from strand to strand from the crochet pattern allow light to illuminate the sacred ceremony. The simplicity of the system makes the unconventional design a match made in heaven for the temporary city hall in The Hague as well!
