A collection of sculptural metal furniture crafted from bent steel tubes.
Dutch designer Tim Teven founded his eponymous studio soon after completing his studies at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2018. Since then, he has created a series of sculptural furniture, shelving systems and home accessories that explore unconventional crafting techniques. Favoring the use of metal, he pushes the limits of the material to design products that often look soft and malleable despite their solidity. The Tube Series is no exception. Similarly to the designer’s previous work, this collection defies conventional forms, offering a more organic take on furniture design.
Developed during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tube Series is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity that enrich contemporary design. With unavailable materials, the designer took the opportunity to use the stock available in his own workshop. Each piece of furniture is crafted from steel tubes of the same size, with the same techniques. To create the different pieces of furniture, the designer bent and pressed individual pieces of steel, resulting in organic shapes with a distinctive aesthetic.
The mechanical action of pressing the tubes of steel allowed the designer to make the most of each piece of material. At the same time, the technique lends the furniture an unusual look. The Tube Series comprises a console, a bench, and two stools. Made from steel, they all feature a zinc plating with a silver finish, but can come in different colors and finishes. You can find the collection on the studio’s website, with prices and availability available on request. Photography by Pierre Castignola.
