The World’s First Completely Compostable Denim Jeans

View all 8 Photos

In what may be a major milestone in the pursuit of ecologically friendly apparel, the Zurich-based firm Freitag has announced that they will be producing denim jeans that are 100% compostable. A part of their “F-abric” line, which grows and produces work wear in Europe instead of outsourcing it, the jeans are made with the environment in mind. The denim is entirely cotton-free, made of 81% linen and 19% hemp, and meets the strictest of Oeko-Tex standards, ensuring it is not in contact with harmful substances at any stage of production.

The jeans have no rivets or nylon thread, using metal buttons where necessary that can be unscrewed and even reused once the pair is ready to be composted. But along with this impressive commitment to conservation, the jeans are still well designed with a contemporary style and a slim cut. They are available in dark blue and black, and Freitag claims the material is actually more comfortable to wear than conventional denim, a clear sign that there is always room for improvement when it comes to design.
