A towering but conveniently portable lamp inspired by traditional Japanese lanterns.

When Florian Kallus and Sebastian Schneider founded their own firm in 2011, the Cologne-based Kaschkasch, they set the stage for an impressive design story. With backgrounds in product design and cabinet making, the duo started creating a stunning portfolio of work that ranges from furniture and lighting design to home accessories and art direction. Over the years, the studio has collaborated with renowned brands and clients, including Normann Copenhagen, Marset, and Hay, among many others.

Throughout their award-winning work (the Red Dot Design Award and the German Design Award, to name a few), the designers explore the expressiveness of understated design and restraint. Safe to say, we’re fans. We’ve loved the sculptural Rolf Benz 908 Valet Stand just as much as we appreciated the minimalist lines of the reed-inspired series of Blomus Ashi Fireplace Tools and the plush forms of the elegant Leolux Kudo Chair. With the Tawa Portable Led Lamp series, Florian Kallus and Sebastian Schneider followed the same design approach.

Refined and practical lighting that brightens indoor or outdoor spaces.

Created for Blomus, the Tawa series references traditional Japanese paper lanterns. The name translates to “tower” in Japanese, and looking at the lamps is easy to see why. Featuring cylindrical forms and a towering presence, the Tawa LED lamps combine a thin aluminum frame with a textile cover that softens the light. A handle provides an easy way to carry light anywhere you want to create a cozy mood. Both the medium 20 inch and the large 28 inch lamps suit outdoor areas, which provides a perfect solution to illuminate a garden, terrace or balcony.

The 2700-6500K LED light is conveniently adjustable in both warmth and brightness. A touch-sensitive button on top of the lamp offers a hands-on way to control the intensity of the light, but the Tawa series also comes with a dedicated app. Using a smartphone, the user can adjust the LED from a distance. As it’s completely portable, the Tawa lamp has built-in batteries that last for 7 to 37 hours, corresponding to the maximum brightness and the lowest one of 20%, respectively. An included magnetic connector allows users to easily charge the batteries. The Tawa Portable LED lamps come in a versatile and tactile gray fabric.
