Invented and patented in 1873 by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss, denim had humble beginnings before it became an American symbol. The fabric was initially used to make work wear for miners, woodcutters, and other laborers. Durable and high-quality, the material also changed over time. It aged with wear to become a one-of-a-kind apparel item that showcased the wearer’s personal journey. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, blue jeans became increasingly more popular and then transformed into a wardrobe staple in the US and across the world. The era of denim design had begun.
