Sunflower Festival in Zama, Japan

View all 10 Photos

In Zama, Japan, there’s an expanse of five-foot sunflowers to challenge Oz’s sea of poppies. Fortunately for visitors to this July-August display, the half a million yellow blooms have a more enlivening effect. At the Sunflower Festival, or Himawari Matsuri, sunflower products of every sort are sold—from ordinary seeds to the more unusual pasta. An elevated platform hugs the edge of the field, so that visitors can take bird’s-eye shots of the cheery flowers themselves.
