Stoney Cross Low-Energy House

View all 13 Photos

An award-winning design by PAD Studio, the Stoney Cross Low-Energy House (and guest house) resides in Lyndhurst, UK. Set on an 18.5 acre plot within New Forest National Park, the 2009 construction replaced an older building on the same ground. The new structures reuse much of the original material, conserving resources while modernizing the Stoney Cross aesthetic. As the houses are surrounded by protected woodland and heath, the building was carefully planned for minimal environmental impact. The new Stoney Cross has many sustainable features including green roofs, earth-berming walls, a geothermal heat pump, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and solar panels that are positioned to see as much sun as possible. Responsible and beautiful, the property’s seemingly cosmetic details–such as its woody interior, large windows, and outdoor pool–also honor the national park, allowing natural light indoors and fostering biodiversity outside.
