Specimens by Michael Mapes

View all 8 Photos

The “Specimens” by New York artist Michael Mapes is a series of elaborate specimen boxes made up of dissected photographs that are compartmentalized into individual fragments within plastic bags, glass vials or magnifiers. The creation is somewhere in between photography and sculpture, functioning both as portraits and as fascinating scientific canvases that make you question the logic behind the organization of each piece.
