Skylock Bike Security by Velo Labs

View all 6 Photos

Designed by by Velo Labs, the Skylock is a solar-powered dual-locking system that connects with one’s phone via Bluetooth. The lock continually charges, and, with just one hour of sunlight, stores enough power to last one week. Its fully charged battery lasts up to a month for the average user, and the battery itself is expected to live for six or more years, so this is a security solution that people can expect to rely on for some time to come.

Taking the hassle out of one’s commute, the system offers both automatic locking and keyless entry. There are three ways to unlock the bike: by using the phone app, approaching the bike while in proximity mode, or keying a code into the lock’s touch pad.

In addition to being an easy-to-use yet virtually indestructible lock, the Skylock is an active anti-theft and cyclist safety device as well. Its touch sensor sends an alert if anything rattles the bike and has adjustable sensitivity, so that one’s phone won’t go off if it starts to rain, for instance. The sensor also detects crashes and checks in with the rider via the app. If there is no response, the app notifies emergency contacts.

The accompanying app also allows for secure bike sharing, as command of the bike lock can be transferred to one’s personal contacts or someone in the Skylock network with the touch of a button. Currently available for a limited-time price of $159, the Skylock is a smart investment for any urban cyclist and especially for people who share their bikes with friends and family.
