Bright and modern, this Prague apartment features redesigned living spaces that give a subtle nod to the original 1930s aesthetic.

Located in the quiet Bubeneč neighborhood in Prague, Czech Republic, this apartment dates back to the 1930s. Tasked with the renovation and redesign of the entire home, Jiří Kabelka and Tereza Kabelková of Studio COSMO completed the project with great consideration for the apartment’s character, drawing inspiration from the original aesthetic to choose the materials and the color palette for the modern living spaces. More specifically, from the old oak floors, white lacquered doors, and brass accents.

In the renovation stage, the team replaced flooring and restored the window frames and doors. Instead of leaving the main hallway as a narrow passageway, the studio opened it up into a more expansive space that connects different areas. At the entrance, a dark green vestibule with an eye-catching circular mirror offers a striking introduction to the new home. Integrated shelving provides room for decorative items, accessories, and books.

A clever reorganization of the floor plan to optimize light and connection between areas.

Originally divided into a series of narrow rooms, the area that faces the street now boasts an open-plan space filled with natural light. On one side, there’s the modern kitchen, seamlessly integrated into one wall. Here, the studio used white for the kitchen cabinets. Nearby, the dining area creates a dialogue between the kitchen and the wood floor – the bespoke dining table has a white top and natural oak legs. Likewise, the dining chairs are beautifully crafted from oak. In the living room, a large sofa provides comfortable seating, while a striking painting becomes the centerpiece of the lounge space. A door opens this area to a balcony that overlooks the street.

In the master bedroom, floor-to-ceiling wardrobes provide ample storage space while maintaining the clean, uncluttered look of the room. Two doors open to reveal a compact workspace that can remain hidden from sight when not in use. Another door slides open to uncover a cozy niche. For the main bathroom, the studio used round tiles and soft curves to create a spa-like space. This room also features concrete slabs and niches; brass fixtures and detailing; and wood accents that add warmth to the decor. Refined and filled with light, this Prague home now boasts elegant but welcoming living spaces that give a nod to the apartment’s 1930s character. Photography by Tereza Kabelková.
