Four concrete houses that invite guests to lose themselves in a spectacular coastal landscape.
Located in Serra de Grândola, near Melides, Portugal, Pa.te.os is a gorgeous coastal retreat surrounded by cork and olive trees, a vineyard and Mediterranean flora. Owners Sofia and Miguel Charters tasked architecture firm Aires Mateus with this hospitality project, more than 15 years after the studio designed the couple’s private home in the area. The site is stunning, overlooking beautiful vegetation, the Melides lagoon, and the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. Inspired by traditional holiday retreats with patios, the complex comprises four independent buildings that keep a perfect balance between open and private spaces.
The architecture practice used concrete for the houses, creating a refuge-like feel without losing the strong connection to nature. Indeed, the buildings feature huge openings, whether in their frames or as large windows. Like the name implies, Pa.te.os explores the concept of patio or courtyard as a space that encourages relaxation and a close connection to nature.
Serene interiors designed with natural materials, tactile surfaces and warm colors.
Complementing the understated but sculptural exteriors, the interiors are minimalist and elegantly simple. The clients collaborated closely with the studio to create authentic spaces that feel warm and welcoming as well as serene. As a result, the material palette features light colors of sand, pearl, and ash. The sky and the greenery add splashes of color. The team used concrete for the floors and tactile stucco for the walls. Solid wood furniture and soft textiles add warmth and a sense of coziness throughout.
Each of the four houses has a different size and layout. However, even the smallest building has a double bedroom, a living room with fireplace, and a private terrace. The largest house boasts three bedrooms, two of which have bathrooms that open to private courtyards with outdoor showers. Additionally, it features a living room, open kitchen, and a spacious patio. Guests also have access to a huge communal courtyard with an infinity pool. Finally, the owners collaborated with British perfumer Lyn Harris to create a special scent that captures the essence of Alentejo, a natural perfume that becomes an integral part of the Pa.te.os experience.
