A boldly creative lighting design inspired by the effect of a cloud obscuring the sun.
Vancouver-based industrial designer Calen Knauf creates unconventional designs that defy tradition and also bring fresh twists to ordinary objects and furniture. For example, he has designed tables with curved tops and lighting without conventional switches. The Overcast LightThe Overcast Light is no exception. Inspired by the effect of clouds obscuring the light of the sun, the lamp is bold and imaginative. It features a cylindrical aluminum base and a handmade paper shade. Crafted from blended paper pulp in a similar way to traditional Japanese paper bowls, each shade is one-of-a-kind and boasts distinctive, rough hewn edges. The material allows the light to shine through with a subtly overcast glow.
For this piece, the designer added an ingenious way to dim the light. Instead of a classic button, the lamp comes with a leather tab that allows the user to adjust the LED light in height and thus move it closer or farther away from the paper shade. This leather tab also doubles as a switch, for more convenience. Made with a white or a dark gray finish, the handmade shade gives the Overcast Light an organic look. The two materials also create a contrast between the smooth finish of aluminum and the textured surface of paper. Photographs© Conrad Brown.
