The OE1 Nook Desk

A desk specially designed to provide privacy in open offices.

Working in an open-plan office can be challenging at times for maintaining focus. Not to mention that the pandemic has also changed the way we work. With this in mind, Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of London-based studio Industrial Facility designed the OE1 Nook for Herman Miller. Part of the furniture brand’s OE1 Workspace Collection that aims to improve workspaces with clever furniture solutions, OE1 Nook offers an easy way to create a private, quiet work area in an open-plan office. The desk references classic library desks. It’s compact and practical as well as conveniently mobile. Each desk comes with either casters or glides to move easily around an office space as needed.

Specially designed as a solo workstation to improve focus, the desk features a wraparound element. This top section provides both visual and acoustic privacy. Optional liners can further dampen an office’s acoustics. The compact desk is easy to move along a wall or to place between other work areas. Whether used on its own or in a group of separate units, the design offers an ingenious solution for people to work together but in a cozy and private space. OE1 Nook is also a great example of sustainable design. Made from recycled steel, it also features recycled felt liners and recycled plastic. Herman Miller offers the desk in various color and material combinations, with several optional features that include integrated leg cable management systems, bag hooks, extra power access, and screen liners that provide extra acoustic reduction.
