The O6 Task Chair

An award-winning office chair that is as elegant as it is comfortable.

Marking the first collaboration between design practice Layer and leading office furniture brand Allsteel, O6 is an office chair that provides a balanced blend of function and comfort in an elegant design. The name refers to the rounded, O-shaped frame that supports the mesh back and contoured seat, and to the six different configuration options that the user can adjust for ultimate comfort. Minimalist and stylish, the chair hides its working mechanisms inside the fluted base.

“Task chairs typically have a highly technical expression that reflects their focus on functionality. Our collaboration with Allsteel was about finding a way to reduce that technical expression to enhance the sense of visual comfort and create a simple appearance. The result is an accessible companion for the evolving workspace, where neutrality and simplicity allows more traditional furniture typologies to be used in a wider variety of settings. This essential design maintains an ownable identity through its simple yet sculptural form and tactile materiality,” says Benjamin Hubert, Layer founder.

Adjustable features and a customizable design that allow each user to create their perfect task chair.

The user can configure different parts to enhance long-term comfort. Apart from the vertical movement of the armrests, there’s also a tilting backrest, multi-directional arm pads, and adjustable lumbar support. The seat moves both horizontally and vertically. While it has so many adjustable parts, O6 boasts a distinctly lightweight and clean design with streamlined and intuitive controls. Designed with long-term comfort in mind, the chair offers cushioned support and tailored ergonomic support thanks to a weight-activated mechanism. Furthermore, O6 comes with an optional non-contact lumbar support; this element creates tension points with the mesh backrest to provide breathable support.

Finally, the chair allows for customization thanks to a range of material and color options. For example, customers can combine mesh and textile materials for the backrest and cushioned seat. They can also select between 22 colors of Spectrum mesh, six 4-Way Stretch mesh colors, and four frame colors. Monochrome or mix-and-match options are also available. Layer and Allsteel launched the O6 chair at NeoCon 2022, where the design won the Best of NeoCon Sustainability Award. Photographs courtesy of Layer.
