Norwegian Home Built on the Cliffs

View all 16 Photos

This Schjelderup Trondahl Architects construction can be found in Holmestrand, Norway, on the cliffs separating the urban and residential neighborhoods. The spacious home is clad with heartwood fir that is finished with a Norwegian adaptation of Shou-Sugi-Ban, a Japanese wood preservation technique. The moody gray exterior matches the surrounding landscape.

Lightening up the look, the interior shines in white, lined with oiled poplar plywood and ash floorboards. The matching built-in furniture is made of fiber cement board and lacquered MDF, while the windows and doors make use of oak timber. From inside, one can take in the view through the large windows and feel the connection on either side of the divide between indoors and outdoors, land and sea, and town and country.
