Inspired by the nesting behaviors of sparrows, these modern birdhouses feature two boxes that allow small birds to shelter close to each other.
Birdhouses provide a great way to offer shelter to birds and increase the biodiversity of an outdoor space. The Noaste Noaber hanging and freestanding birdhouses have a thoughtful design that also takes into account the nesting habits of one of the most ubiquitous species of bird: the sparrow. To create the Noaste Noaber series, Dutch designer Frederik Roijé took inspiration from the behavior of sparrows – more specifically, from the way these small birds live in groups and shelter together. The name of the series also gives a nod to this concept, as the two words mean “neighbor” in the Twentse region of the Netherlands.
Capturing the concept of two neighboring houses, the Noaste Noaber birdhouses feature two nesting boxes, both designed with gabled roofs. Crafted from corten steel, the exterior shell boasts a rusty-orange color and a textured surface – over time, the material will slowly corrode further and develop a thicker protective layer. Made from weatherproof plywood, the two boxes provide a warm and dry nesting space for sparrows and other small birds.
The Frederik Roijé Noaste Noaber birdhouses come in two styles: freestanding and hanging. While the freestanding version can be easily placed in a garden by sticking the pole base into the ground, the hanging birdhouse can be suspended on a tree branch, a wall-mounted hook, or a fence. Whether used individually or in a set, the birdhouses provide an elegant solution to welcome more birds into an outdoor space and enhance the decor at the same time.
Similarly to other Frederik Roijé designs, these birdhouses are produced locally in the Netherlands. This way, the design studio and brand ensures a perfect balance between sustainability and quality. Discover the two birdhouses in the Gessato Design Store. Images courtesy of Frederik Roijé.
