Talented designers have led the way on this path to change, with ingenious interpretations of the famous biblical scene currently available. Whether it’s a modern stained glass nativity set or one made of hand painted wooden blocks, these contemporary designs celebrate the birth of the Son of God and encourage people to ponder the meaning and message of the scene. Before we explore one ingenious product design, which is also a great gift for Christmas, let’s answer some of the most frequently asked questions about nativity scenes.

What is a minimalist nativity set?

A minimalist nativity set depicts the nativity scene, but in an ultra-modern style rather than a traditional one. Some of these designs are more minimalist than others. For example, simple wood pieces that indicate different characters by subtle changes in shape. Others boast text that marks each character, while others use color to differentiate between different pieces.

What should be in a nativity set?

Every nativity set should include Baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. A more complete minimalist nativity scene would also include the Magi, an ox and a donkey, an angel, sheep and a shepherd, and even other animals.

What is a nativity scene?

A nativity scene is a Christmas decoration that depicts the birth of Jesus and comprises several figurines that represent the holy family. Apart from Mary, Joseph, and Jesus Christ, additional pieces may include a stable with a manger, an ox, a donkey, sheep, a shepherd, the three wise men, an angel, and the Star of Bethlehem.

What are the religious symbols of a nativity set?

While the Baby Jesus represents the Divine and God incarnated, Mary and Joseph symbolize faith and devotion, and the stable and manger scene represent humility. Although not depicted or mentioned in the Gospels, the ox and the donkey have become omnipresent characters in the Christmas nativity scene. The donkey may stand for service and peace, while the ox stands for strength and sacrifice. However, there are other interpretations for the inclusions of these two specific animals, with the donkey said to represent paganism and the ox the Jewish people, or sin and sanctity.

What is the purpose or significance of a nativity set?

A porcelain, stoneware, plastic, metal or wood nativity set is a central part of observing Christmas. Apart from allowing people of faith to celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas, a traditional or minimalist nativity scene also encourages reflection and expressing a feeling of thankfulness. The main themes of the scene are love, sacrifice and redemption, with the Son of God brought into the world to cleanse the sins of the faithful with his death on the cross. Additionally, the humble setting symbolizes humility.

Why a minimalist nativity set over a traditional one?

A minimal nativity set maintains all of the symbolism of a traditional scene, but present the themes through simpler, more understated forms. From a design point of view, these minimalist scenes might look better in a contemporary holiday decor while also doubling as works of art and centerpieces. The choice might not be only aesthetic, however, as it can also symbolize the idea of keeping traditions and following the Christian faith in modern times.

14 characters made of beech wood and bright or earthy colors.

With the Ikonic Modern Nativity Scene, Dutch designer Floris Hovers presents a more playful and vibrant interpretation of the traditional view of the holy family. Featuring an understated style, his work explores essential forms and showcases a deft use of minimalism and color. Additionally, his designs are playful and imaginative. Floris Hovers’ famous Archetoys series, created for Italian brand Magis, has been included in the permanent collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. For Ikonic, the designer has created several fun toys, including a Christmas nativity set.

This minimalist nativity set is complete, as it features 14 characters. Made from beech wood, the figurines include Baby Jesus, Joseph and Mary, the three Magi, the Angel Gabriel, a shepherd with four sheep, an ox, and a donkey. The wooden nativity set’s box has two lids and easily transforms into a barn with a roof. The characters all have minimalist shapes and angular forms. Apart from their distinct silhouettes, the pieces also stand out with their color combinations. For example, the baby and the angel have a bright white finish, while the three kings wear golden crowns. The shepherd along with the ox and donkey boasts earthy hues, while the sheep have an off-white color.

All of the 14 characters fit into the box like puzzle pieces that come together to create a unitary design. As for the box itself, it features a natural finish that showcases the light color and textures of wood. Perfect as a gift, this minimalist nativity set suits children’s rooms and any other area of the home as a playful Christmas decoration.
