The Manico Armchair

View all 15 Photos

An elegant armchair inspired by Sicilian farming.

Originally designed by Giuseppe Arezzi in 2012 for a competition that asked Sicilian creatives to design pieces of furniture inspired by Sicily, Manico is a distinctive armchair with a story. The Italian designer collaborated with art gallery It’s Great Design to launch a new version that features the same clean lines and blend of natural materials. The lounge chair takes inspiration from rural life in Sicily. More specifically, from agricultural practices, and how farmers have adapted to modern technology as opposed to using strictly manual tools.

Manico features a tubular ash wood frame that reminds of the handles of traditional agricultural utensils. Leather straps connect the seat and backrest to the frame and add a rustic touch to the chair. Made from a blend of cotton and linen, the fabric is soft as well as durable. Cushions enhance comfort further. Handmade in Italy, the Manico armchair comes in a new It’s Great Design edition. While the frame is made from light ash wood, the cotton/linen fabric and the cushions come in four colors: Blue, Yellow, Green, and Cream. Natural leather straps and stainless steel hardware complete the design. Manico suits indoor use only, but it offers a great way to create a relaxing space in a lounge area. Ideally, one that opens to great views of a rural landscape to bring the design full circle. Photography© Natale Leontini.
