Aiming to elevate the realm of optical devices into an arena of wonder, “Vestige” arises as an enchanting manifestation of light and substance. This artistic creation, a lamp of distinctive presence, emanates from the renowned craftsmanship of glass artist Peter Kovacsy and the design prowess of Ross Gardam.
Vestige features a solid parabolic cone nestled within a rectangular base, made from cast crystal glass. Kovacsy, whose masterful touch has created countless wonders in the world of glass art, uses this medium to celebrate the allure, texture, and generous volume of the glass. The result is a lighting design that reflects an appreciation of both form and material, a spectacle to behold.
The design is intentionally ambiguous. Boasting a brutalist-inspired sculptural form, the lamp reveals its full archetype when illuminated from within. By maximizing the scale and volume of the cast glass, the lamp’s radiance is amplified, casting an aura of luminescence that captivates the observer. This unique table lamp springs from a fruitful collaboration between Kovacsy and Gardam, which couples the glass artist’s unique talents with the designer’s geometric sensitivity and fascination with the surreal. Kovacsy’s extensive practice that spans three decades, with notable work in large-scale cast glass, echoes the remote southern regions of the Western Australian environment.
The embodiment of minimalism, Vestige’s shapes are born from an intricate and meticulous crafting process. Each cast glass form is intimately coupled with a raw aluminum base and a carefully machined conical dimmer, resulting in a product of handcrafted perfection, polished and waxed to a mesmerizing sheen. To define Vestige as merely a lamp would be an inadequate description; it is a strikingly radiant artifact that epitomizes an ethereal play of light.
Unveiled amid the artistic fervor of Milan Design Week 2023, at the TRANSCENDENCE exhibition, Vestige boasts a brutalist-inspired silhouette that leverages the inherent glow of opaque glass.
