La Maison au Bord de l’Eau

View all 12 Photos

The late architect Charlotte Perriand originally designed La Maison au Bord de l’Eau for magazine L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui’s 1934 affordable getaway home competition. At the time, Perriand’s work stood out, but no would built the small, U-shaped house, and Perriand’s sketches didn’t leave the page.

Now, eighty years later, Perriand’s vision can finally be found on the beach, thanks to her architecture firm and fashion label Louis Vuitton. The prefabricated two-bedroom welcomes tenants with a polished wood interior and a central deck permeated by sunlight. Attractive and practical, the iroko floors and okuma walls naturally repel insects, and the deck doubles as a living room. Additional details include sliding doors, piloti stilts, a well, and furniture by Louis Vuitton. Altogether, this waterfront collaboration appeals to lovers of architecture and style alike, transforming Perriand’s 1934 design into a contemporary destination.
