KT / Kata Steel Decor by Suppose Design Office

View all 7 Photos

The Japanese studio SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE is best-known for their architecture, and the influence of their work with houses and interiors is evident in their new line of furniture and everyday objects. Called KT / Kata—which may be translated as “person,” “side,” “place,” or “method”—the thoughtful series explores alternative uses and forms for industrial steel.

Suppose Design Studio chose steel as their base material because of its association with architectural supports such as pillars and beams. Explaining their vision, they say that their work alters the “general image of materials and shapes by designing the atmosphere with addition and subtraction.” By reducing the bulk of steel and refashioning it as decor, they transform it into something more delicate but just as strong and alluring.

The resulting designs are small but promise to have a great impact on one’s daily life. Kata includes vases with square and “C”-shaped profiles, a tray and a pot stand in the form of a capital letter “H,” a set of chopstick stands, an incense holder bent to look like an “L,” a narrow hanging flower vase, a business card stand, a trestle, and a floor-length mirror. The diverse collection of furnishings and products gently encourage the user to relax, dine, and work with a sense of order and attention to beauty.

Each piece is made of steel and plated with one’s choice of brass or a black blasted metal, available for some of the designs. A few of the items, such as the vases, also come in a range of sizes. For purchasing inquiries, contact the studio directly.
