Designed with both convenience and comfort in mind, the folding Whippet Bicycle aims to become a reliable companion for urban riders. Just like other folding bikes, this model takes up minimal space while in storage. But unlike other designs, it actually looks like it feels great to ride. And it scores high points on style, too. Created by product designer and engineer Graham Powell, co-founder of Whippet Bicycle, the bike features a unique, patent pending folding mechanism and a range of standard components to make repairs easy and cheap.
The classic diamond frame comes with custom Columbus oval 25CrMo4 tubing as well as with Reynolds 631 tubing for the chain and seat stays. The twin oval tubes slightly bend to absorb shocks, for a smoother ride, while the main frame’s controlled flexing also allows the user to install narrower tires, if needed. Clever and ingenious, the folding system uses a ’tilt-tuck-tidy’ mechanism that requires no tools. The lightweight bicycle is also easy to transport when folded thanks to an integrated handle that lets the owner ‘roll’ the bike on its rear tire. The company will announce a launch date later this year, with single-speed, urban and premium models currently in the works. Photography by Helen Powell. Photo credits: Whippet Bicycle.
