A cozy mountain cabin set against the majestic Dolomites in northern Italy.
Located in the scenic South Tyrol in northern Italy, House B-K is a cozy residence that opens to spectacular views of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. A modern Alpine cabin that merges traditional architecture with contemporary design, the house beautifully blends into the picturesque site. Perathoner Architects, previously known as RP Architects, designed the retreat with a blend of stone and wood, in a nod to the forested mountain landscape.
The house stands on a steep hillside, at around 3,280 feet or 1,000 meters above sea level. Celebrating local traditions, the project offers a fresh take on Alpine architecture with a stone base that boasts a light, smooth finish, and a wood upper level designed with horizontal and vertical boards as well as filigree-like panels. Rising from the slope, the building provides optimal views towards the majestic mountains.
Following the site’s topography, the studio designed the cabin with two floors, with the lower level partly built into the hillside. While the northern façade is more opaque, the southern side has large windows. The glazing frames the panorama and floods the living spaces with natural light.
Like the best Alpine cabins, this one features interiors finished with warm wood surfaces. Chosen for their pronounced grain and textures, the wood boards cover the floors, walls and ceilings in the upper level. Elsewhere, the architects also used white paint for some walls and black-painted metal elements for the staircase balusters. Located at the heart of the house, an open-plan kitchen, dining area and living room all open to mountain views. At the center of this space, a wood-burning fireplace enhances coziness further.
Perathoner Architects completed this project with a strong focus on sustainability. Apart from using locally sourced materials, the team also built the house to conform to strict energy efficiency standards. As a result, House B-K has received the coveted Casa Clima Nature certification. Photography© Aldo Amoretti.
