Based in Porto, Paulo Moreira Architectures is a creative studio specializing in architectural, cultural, and research projects tailored for a post-boom era. Founded by Paulo Moreira in 2011 amid an economic downturn and scarce prospects for grand architectural ventures, the seemingly imprudent decision to return to Portugal while pursuing an academic career in the UK was driven by a desire to play an active role, both professionally and as a citizen, in the revitalization of Rua dos Caldeireiros in Paulo’s hometown—a street desperately in need of architectural attention.
The initial, historically-conscious building restorations marked the beginning of a long-term dedication to actively contribute to the city’s enhancement and restoration. Since then, the studio has expanded its portfolio, taking on projects in Porto, Lisbon, and beyond—encompassing residential, educational, commercial, and industrial initiatives, as well as public realm interventions. Concurrently, the studio is deeply invested in architectural research, particularly in areas of urban conflict and social deprivation.
Through their projects and research, Paulo Moreira Architectures pursues a broader intellectual mission. An international team of collaborators operates both within Portugal and overseas, envisioning a redefined role for architecture in today’s world.
