A multi-functional shelter designed sustainably with a sauna and living spaces.

Tucked away in the heart of France‘s majestic “Volcans d’Auvergne” region lies a special shelter that speaks to lovers of design, minimalism, and nature. Uniquely framed by the imposing “La Roche Nité” rock formation, the volume stands as an ode to the awe-inspiring forces of nature – volcanic and glacial – that have etched their stories into the valley’s topography.

The off-grid sanctuary is elegantly perched on the boundaries of a secluded property, ensuring a harmonious balance between solitude and connection to the main homestead. But this creation isn’t merely a sauna; it’s a refuge embodying minimalist design, where visitors can pause and soak in the ethereal mountainous vistas.

The thoughtfully designed interior caters to the holistic needs of a retreat. It provides a spacious bench for restful contemplation or sleep, a wood-burning fireplace offering both warmth and a means for cooking, an outdoor shower, and a large window. The expansive opening bathes the space in abundant natural light while framing stunning views.

Sustainable architecture that blends locally sourced materials with reclaimed elements.

Designed and constructed by Collectif Volatile, the project embodies a DIY spirit and budget-friendly approach. Four wooden pillars enable the structure to keep a delicate touch on the land. At the same time, the elevation allows life to flourish undisturbed beneath the structure. Locally sourced and eco-friendly materials highlight the project’s commitment to sustainability. The use of local timber for the structure and cladding reflects the spirit of the surrounding region, while repurposed elements like doors, glazing, and pillars from previous construction sites add a unique aesthetic charm.

Designed with resilience in mind, the sauna and shelter stands undeterred against harsh winds and heavy snowfall. The strategic use of wood siding and corrugated metal sheets optimizes each material’s durability, ensuring longevity despite the occasionally unforgiving weather. All these elements fuse together to create an architectural symphony that pays tribute to the power of simplicity and the enduring beauty of nature.
