The Chanoma Japanese Clay Teapot

View all 10 Photos

An elegant collection that reimagines traditional Japanese clay teapots with a modern twist.

Founded in 1949, Japanese company Koizumi & Co., Ltd has been focusing on bringing traditional Tokoname pottery into homes – first in Japan, and later in countries all over the world. Working with local artisans who still use traditional crafting methods, the brand promotes the rich culture of tea ceremonies and the beauty of the handmade Japanese clay teapot. For the Chanoma collection, Koizumi has partnered with designer Koji Takahashi to create an elegant interpretation of Tokoname teapots, also known as kyusu. In 2022, the Chanoma collection received a prestigious Good Design Award.

The series comprises teapots that translate the well-known kyusu teapot shape into an elegant, contemporary form. Celebrating 1,000 years of Tokoname stoneware, the Chanoma teapots feature distinctive shapes with a large side handle and a smaller spout. Tapered with an ergonomic shape, the handles provide a comfortable way to serve tea. Integrated large sieves filter the tea, preserving any loose leaves inside the teapots. Additionally, lids with rounded handles allow users to keep the tea hot for longer.

Keeping true to ancient pottery traditions, every Japanese clay teapot is carefully handmade. Craftspeople from the city of Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, use locally sourced clay to bring the Chanoma collection to life. These stoneware teapots have an unglazed surface and a porous, matte texture, preserving heat and giving tea leaves a softer flavor.

Beautiful colors that enhance the handmade teapots in different ways.

Designer Koji Takahashi created the collection with three colors that all showcase the beauty of these handcrafted Japanese clay teapots in different ways. While terracotta adds warmth to the minimalist designs, the ivory version highlights the delicately rounded forms of the teapots. Finally, the black finish gives a nod to traditional Japanese cast iron teapots. The Chanoma collection also comprises matching tea cups that are exquisitely made as the teapots. Crafted by hand from Tokoname clay, they boats terracotta, black and ivory hues. The former two also feature an ivory interior that adds an elegant contrast to the darker exterior colors.

Perfect as a gift for tea lovers, the Chanoma collection brings the Japanese tea serving ritual into modern living spaces. From a solitary cup enjoyed on a rainy evening to several cups shared with friends and guests, the set brings a rich flavor to the tea drinking experience.
