Casa RJ By Archiplan Studio

Inside Casa RJ, the past is not only very much alive, but it’s also placed in a direct dialogue with the present to create a perfect equilibrium in a distinctive living space. Much like the AL Apartment completed by the Archiplan Studio in 2012, Casa RJ celebrates its heritage while anchoring itself in the contemporary. The two time periods, separated by centuries, maintain their own character yet also complement each other perfectly. Located in Mantua, Italy, the multi-story building dates back to 1500. The studio renovated the apartment and kept the original distribution of the living spaces, with furniture used to subtly separate areas and divide the open-plan rooms.

Rich textures, natural tones and materials, striking ceiling decorations from the 1500s along with walls dating back to the beginning of the 19th century combine in a multi-layered interior where contrasts abound. A refined beauty runs through each layer, connecting the opposite elements in a unitary living space where each detail stands out and claims its place while not overwhelming the whole. Here, designer furniture and lighting stand alongside antique decorations and weathered wood beams. Apart from being a stylish residence, Casa RJ beautifully pays homage to centuries of Mantuan and Italian architecture and design. Photography by Davide Galli.
