The Carl Hansen & Søn Plico Chair

A cozy and timeless lounge chair designed with a folding frame.

Following the introduction of the elegant FK Bookcase designed by Fabricius & Kastholm, Carl Hansen & Søn has announced the launch of another fine piece of furniture created by the Danish design duo: the Plico Chair. Originally made alongside the bookcase in 1964, the lounge chair won the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Furniture Prize. Plico now joins Carl Hansen & Søn’s ever-growing collection of timeless Scandinavian designs. In a similar way to other Fabricius & Kastholm furniture, the chair highlights elements most designers would try to conceal. Apart from visible joints, it also boasts exposed brass fittings.

Beautifully crafted, the Plico chair features a solid oak frame. The rear legs bend slightly to curve the backrest in an elegant way. Complementing the warmth of wood, leather armrests give a distinct character to the design, along with the golden brass hardware. Finally, the canvas seat and backrest and the stitched linen canvas upholstery give more lightness to the design while also enhancing seating comfort. “The Plico Chair is an extremely versatile piece of furniture – not only in its function of being a foldable lounge chair, but also in its appearance, and it fits elegantly into the living room, the cottage, and the hotel room and lobby. It is a comfortable and cozy chair to sit in with a good book and a cup of coffee,” explains Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn.

More than just a beautiful and comfortable lounge chair, Plico is also crafted with flexibility in mind. Even the name, which means “to fold” in Latin, alludes to this. The adjustable backrest and the frame fold to occupy as little space as possible while not in use. The chair comes in two versions, one with a high back and an included neck cushion. Both versions of the Plico Chair will be available from August 2021. Photographs© Carl Hansen & Søn.
