A design that puts traditional craftsmanship back into focus in a creative way.
The beautiful Canvas chair pays homage to craftsmanship, handmade products, and the slow movement with a clever and playful chair concept. Created by the Malmö-based Soft studio, the chair aims to highlight the exquisite workmanship that goes into making the upholstery. The design borrows from classic embroidery, featuring an ash wood circle that frames the seat like a work of art. Unfinished edges or flowing materials accentuate the beauty of the craft. At the same time, these details enhance the chair’s artistic, sculpture-like vibe.
The studio also put the focus on the time-consuming art of making textiles and tanned leather, collaborating with a tannery, textile mill, and other designers to provide different takes on the classic seat. Created by design duo Butler/Lindgård, the “Goosebumps” textile weave takes inspiration from human skin to promote the acceptance of all kinds of bodies, regardless of their age. Visitors at the London Design Fair 2017 has the opportunity to admire this chair concept up close.
The other two seats feature leather hide from the Tärnsjö leather tannery and a linen from the Klässbols Linen Weaving Mill. The former boasts scars, natural variations, and bite marks, while the latter features the “Norrland” fabric which displays the usually hidden backside of the weave. Made of ash wood, Canvas comes with golden brass details that beautifully complement its light frame. Photographs© Ulrika Kestere.
