The Ax Stool

View all 24 Photos

A thoughtfully designed stool inspired by a split log, Ax is as playful as it is practical and versatile.

Italian design is the epitome of an avant-garde, artistic spirit of boundless creativity. From sculptural wine racks made of solid marble to monkey-shaped lamps and dinnerware that brings together Eastern and Western decorative motifs, Italian designs usually either fascinate or bring a smile on one’s face. Often, they achieve both at the same time. Created by industrial designer Alessandro Stabile for Italian furniture brand Zilio A&C, the Ax Stool transforms practical seating into a playful décor accent. The design draws inspiration from the shape of a timber log split open by a woodcutter’s ax, adding a fun accent to any space.

The shape of the stool does not have only aesthetic value – it makes Ax conveniently stackable for easy storage. Additionally, the “split” center section allows users to easily carry this piece of furniture whenever needed.

Crafted from ash plywood, the Ax Stool is both lightweight and durable. So durable, in fact, that it suits commercial spaces, office settings, and other public environments like bookstores or restaurants. Apart from the natural version that showcases the light colors of ash wood and its beautiful textures, this stool also comes in timeless Black that complements any palette. The Red, Blue, and Green versions add a pop of color to any space while enhancing the playfulness of the design. Photography© Alessandro Stabile, Zilio A&C.
