The Ariake Furniture Collection

Gorgeous furniture created by a team of renowned international designers.

Founded by furniture factories Legnatec and Hirata Chair, Ariake represents a new chapter in the history of the traditional furniture producing town of Morodomi in Saga prefecture, Japan. Appropriately, the name Ariake refers to both the Ariake Sea and to the word for “daybreak.”

To develop the Ariake collection, the two companies invited a team of award-winning designers to create stunning furniture over the course of two intensive workshops. Held in Morodomi, the workshops provided a synergistic working experience, with everyone, from the designers to the craftspeople, photographer Sebastian Stadler and studio AnnerPerrin who completed the art direction, collaborating to bring the Ariake vision to life. And the result? A beautiful collection of furniture that celebrates the spirit of Japanese design and culture while providing practical and imaginative solutions for modern living spaces.

The Ariake collection is designed by a team of talented creatives from Japan and other countries from around the world: Anderssen & Voll, Gabriel Tan, Keiji Ashizawa, Norm Architects, Note Design Studio, Shin Azumi, Staffan Holm, Zoe Mowat, and Studio MK27. Every piece of furniture and every home accessory exemplifies the beauty of traditional craftsmanship from Morodomi, Japan. The material palette comprises natural materials and finishes, from oak, ash, cedar, and hinoki wood to leather, canvas, and paper cord. Eye-catching indigo dyes also enhance some of the designs in striking ways.

Minimalist designs that merge traditional Japanese elements and contemporary design creatively.

From lounge chairs to bed frames, tables, mirrors, and room screens, the Ariake collection offers a complete solution to create the perfect home décor. Every design combines a minimalist aesthetic with function and quality craftsmanship. Many products give a nod to Japanese interiors and furniture, who are often multifunctional. For example, the Sagyo table that features an integrated tray that moves on a central gap that also makes the table easy to fold and store. Likewise, the Cabine Mirror gives a nod to Japanese designs and traditions. This multifunctional double mirror features a concealed coat stand at the back.

Other designs give homage to Japan in different ways. Take the Aizome Cabinet, for example. Minimalist and practical, the cabinet also adds a striking decorative accent to a room thanks to the use of two shades of Japanese indigo dye. The Kumiko Cabinet incorporates the classic kumiko screens in a sculptural and highly creative design. Wood screens made of slender vertical lamellae in a contrasting black finish partly cover the interior shelves made of light wood, creating a beautiful effect. Similarly, the Lattice Bench plays with transparent and solid surfaces in a design that takes inspiration from the architecture of Japanese stores.

Some Ariake designs also focus on flexibility. The Sagyo desk easily transforms from a work desk into a dressing table thanks to the included magnetic mirror and shelf. For the Kadai dining table, the brand offers two top options, which change the design in different ways: one tabletop crafted from wood with a live edge, and the other from sleek glass with a smoky finish. The Ariake chair and armchair come with several options for the seat. Customers can select between leather, woven paper cord or canvas straps, in matching or contrasting colors to the solid wood frame made with a blend of traditional and new joinery techniques. Regardless of design and purpose, every Ariake product has a timeless character while also infusing modern spaces with the soul of Japanese design.
