Few things embody love of cars and travel as perfectly as this story we received from our friends at Column M. It has all the elements of a good movie or book. A life-long passion ignited in childhood, adrenaline-fueled car races, a dramatic car wreck, an incredible twist of fate, and an epic journey around the world.
For South Africa-based Frisco, aka Andre, the story began when he was a child, watching the renowned Kyalami car race alongside his father. The fire only grew over the years, and he fell in love with the classic Porsche cars, especially the 911 T/R model. Lightweight and fast, the limited-edition model became a collector’s item. In one of his early ‘90s car races, Frisco drove his upgraded 1969 911 T/R on the same Kyalami circuit but totaled the vehicle. The car was then sold and reimagined as a road car. Fast-forward to 2016 and to the moment Frisco laid his eyes on a damaged car sitting among many others on the property of a car collector. His very own 911 T/R, waiting patiently. After a restoration process that took more than 6 months, the car looked better than ever before, even boasting period-correct green paint.
And because all good stories should end on a high note, this 911 T/R began an epic journey at the beginning of 2017. Frisco and his wife plan on driving it around the world, stopping by several historic sites and world-renowned events. The quest started in Australia and then reached New Zealand. On the itinerary, the couple aims to complete Targa Tasmania in April 24 – 29 and the Pan Am Classic Rally in June-July, driving 11000 km from Savannah to Seattle. On second thought, epic doesn’t seem to quite cover it. If you want to see images from the globetrotting experience of a lifetime, check out Frisco’s Instagram page. Photography credits: Frisco911.
