Innovative, beautifully designed and practical, Sostanza illustrates perfectly how good design can transform an ordinary object into a stunning product. The pencil is designed by Torino-based Sotterranea Officina Sperimentale studio and features a simple but clever construction made with only two handcrafted elements. A wooden body holds the graphite while an external ring keeps the mine in place. The graphite can be replaced when needed, making the pencil last a lifetime. Sostanza, which means ‘substance’, brings together style and function in an expertly crafted product that is as beautiful as it is convenient. The natural wood section is handmade by woodturners in Vicenza, while the silver ring is cast and finished by hand by goldsmiths in Valenza. There are five versions available, each made with a different type of wood and a complementing silver ring finish, to suit any preference. Pear, mahogany, eastern black walnut, ebony, and amaranth are paired with dark gray, dark green, polished gray, satin white, and rose silver rings. Thanks to its ergonomic shape, Sostanza is ideal for sketching, writing, and drawing.
The campaign to fund the project has surpassed its goal, but you can still become a backer until August 6 to get a pencil at a lower price. You can also choose between the paper packaging or the modern test tube package. Images courtesy of Sotterranea Officina Sperimentale.
