A Historical Loft Renovated in Lisbon

View all 12 Photos

This beautiful Lisbon apartment was renovated by AVA Architects. Located on the first floor of a building that dates back to 1893, the space is deeply connected to history. While updating the loft, it was important for the architects to preserve the interior walls, wooden floors and window frames, and plaster stucco ceilings. They kept many of the traditional elements; whatever was in good condition was left alone so that it could show the rich life of the building. As if in conversation with the older parts of the home, newer pieces such as built-in shelving, a zigzagging table, and chalkboard panels stand out without overwhelming the visual atmosphere. The fresh additions don’t blend in; rather they add a second, textured and colorful layer to each room. Photography by Jose Campos.
