A Dramatic Extension for a Victorian Home

View all 15 Photos

Scale of Ply is an asymmetrical extension for a Victorian home in Dublin, Ireland. Though an extensive update, the contemporary addition is invisible from the front of the historical house. Made of plywood, the NOJI Architects design is cleanly lined with a triangular lattice. The geometric pattern supports the structure and creates visual interest in the open plan kitchen and dining area. Nevertheless, the key quality of the new space is that it faces the garden, bringing natural lighting in through the large windows and creating more points at which the residents can interact with the natural world. Whether resting inside at the window seat and daybed or walking outside on the patio, one can soak up some sun, admire the plants and flowers, and feel a little luckier than before.
