The high-speed race is what most fans love about motorsport, but if the adrenaline fueled competition is all about the cars’ performance, it’s in those short moments of respite when the cars stay still at the pit stops that one can truly appreciate their design. Michael Fordham offers a beautiful glimpse at those particular moments through a series of images he took at the 2016 Silverstone Classic while standing on the balcony of the Silverstone hospitality suite, just above the pit stops. The photographs accompany a piece Fordham wrote for Influx Magazine, and show the historic and classic cars in all their glory through an aerial perspective that puts them in a new light. Seen from above, the Lola T222 Can Am, Ford GT40, McLaren M8F, or the Porsche 962 display their striking lines, vibrant colors and dynamic designs in contrast to the textured surfaces of the lanes. But these images don’t feature just the classic racers, they also capture the pit crews as they interact with the cars and the drivers – brief and intense moments which are now frozen in time. If you’re a motorsport enthusiast or if you simply love classic racers, you should definitely consider taking a trip to UK next summer to the Silverstone village in the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside. Tickets for the July 2017 event will be available on the official website starting from November. Photography by Michael Fordham.
