A Custom BMW Urban GS

When a tall client approaches a creative and innovative motorcycle workshop for a custom build, the result is not surprisingly one of a kind. Moving away from the usual models used for custom builds, Benjie’s Cafe Racers created a distinct motorcycle that blends urban style, an adventurous spirit and post-apocalyptic accents in a cohesive design. The decision to ignore the more convenient Ducati Scrambler for the base of this particular custom build had two main reasons behind it. First, the client’s height meant that the final bike would be too small to ride in complete comfort. Second, the team welcomed a challenge. The BMW Urban GS uses the 2005 BMW R 1200GS as foundation. The big, scrambler bike matched the imposing stature of the owner, but significant modifications were required to infuse the design with an urban vibe and a slightly aggressive style. The frame was shortened by cutting the tail part and making a new subframe, while the handlebars were re-positioned. All the plastic parts were replaced by aluminum boasting a polished finish and left unpainted to lend the motorcycle an urban, industrial charisma. The fuel tank, originally designed for longer adventures, was replaced by a smaller tank inspired by the toaster tanks of the ’70s BMW airheads. Sleek 2-by-2 exhausts reach the rear where large muffler barrels enhance the aggressive look. The seat was reshaped by the workshop to suit the new frame and now features dark Alcantara upholstery with detailed stitching. Paint is minimally used on the front and tank, with matte black complemented by thin golden stripes. Truly a work of art on two wheels. Images courtesy of BCR Designs.
