The New Old Light by Kimu Studio

View all 6 Photos

With Chinese New Year only two weeks away, a common sight I encounter during my weekend trips to Chinatown is the paper lanterns that hang outside storefronts. The translucent shades are nostalgic, and the soft glow is just enough to illuminate while creating an intimate ambience. The beauty of the paper shade, which has been withstood the test of time, is the inspiration and transformative element in The New Old Light. Designed by Taiwan-based Kimu Studio, the lamp is a hybrid between east and west, such that out of a metal shade peeks a frosty and malleable paper one. The flexibility of this paper extension adds richness of form and materiality to the lamp, and effortlessly bridges traditional and modern.
