Skirt & Rock House by MCK Architects

View all 17 Photos

MCK Architects have designed an extension to an existing house in Sydney, Australia. The owners of the original bungalow wanted to enlarged the house and create a stronger connection to the outdoors. The Skirt and Rock House got the name because of the modern architecture displayed by the new residential structure and the existence of a large rock on the property which is also part of the design as well as the focal and pivotal natural element in the new composition. The first floor accommodation is concealed in the black roof form, providing a recessive appearance from the street and nestling into the landscape. The shingled roof contains the void and envelops the parents’ suite and gallery library/study. It rests on two legs at opposite corners of the building allowing possibility of a clear opening to the garden and pond.
