The Roest Lighting Series

A series of rusty lighting designed with a minimalist aesthetic that highlights gorgeous textures and colors.

Seattle-based brand Graypants has a penchant for making highly imaginative lighting for modern interiors. From the popular series of recycled corrugated cardboard pendants to playful designs that use ping pong balls to reproduce the silhouette of a cloud or sculptural installations inspired by social behaviors, the Graypants lighting collection is in a league of its own. The new Roest series follows the same creative approach, but uses minimalism to enhance the lighting design. Created in a collaboration between Dutch designer Joost Joseph van Veldhuizen, founder of VanJoost studio, the rusty lighting collection explores the beauty of nature via the use of oxidation effects.

Roest means “rust” in Dutch. Here, the designer used the oxidation process to transform simple steel forms into striking creations. The series comprises pendant lights, a ceiling light, and horizontal lights. All of them have simple cylindrical forms and the collection’s signature rusty lighting treatment. Handcrafted with care, the lights combine contemporary design and artisan skill in products that bring the ruggedness of the outdoors inside living spaces. The minimalist lighting boasts warm colors and beautiful textures. The surface of the rusted steel features a special treatment that stops further oxidation and preserves the material. At the same time, this treatment ensures that the rusted surface will not stain.

The Roest collection includes several vertical lights in various sizes. Two designs also feature a combination of rusty lighting and gray zinc. Available in different lengths and widths, these pendants provide the perfect solution to create a spectacular composition in a room. Ideal for dining rooms and kitchens as well as meeting rooms and workspaces, the horizontal lights illuminate with a warm glow from a slatted opening underneath. Finally, the large ceiling light offers a refined way to brighten a room and make it look both elegant and cozy. Black fabric cords and black canopies complement the reddish-brown surface of the rusty lighting from the Roest collection. Photographs© Graypants.
