The Krane

An immersive retreat in one of Copenhagen’s harbors.

More than just a contemporary space, The Krane explores an ingenious concept to offer a multi-sensory experience in an industrial landscape. Visionary owner Klaus Kastbjerg hired architect Mads Møller of Arcgency to bring his creative idea to life. Built in a former coal crane on the edge of the Nordhavn harbor in Copenhagen, Denmark, the crane hotel welcomes its guests in an aesthetic haven. Guests find a reception area on the ground floor and a meeting room with glazed walls on the first floor. A spa occupies the second level, while the top floor features the private retreat with a lounge and terrace.

The minimalist décor and dark color scheme reference the structure’s past as well as the rich history of Danish craftsmanship. The black palette transforms the interior, creating a serene atmosphere while also enhancing the views. “There are hundreds of different shades of black. Depending on the time of day, you can see so many subtle nuances,” Møller explains. Leather, stone, wood, and steel add a premium look and feel to the décor. Throughout the structure, the custom furniture is expertly handcrafted by local artisans. The primary pieces fold away or disappear behind panels, minimizing visual distractions further and allowing the guests at the crane hotel to admire the sea and harbor in peace, along with the gorgeous views over the city.
