Locanda La Gelsomina Boutique Hotel

View all 18 Photos

Even before stepping inside Locanda La Gelsomina, guests realize that this quaint, family-run hotel defies a clear-cut label. Nestled in the historical area of Birgu, the building sits atop of one of the highest points of the isle. This Maltese city has roots which go back all the way to the Phoenician era, while the structure itself dates back to the 1550s. It still features a simple facade that reminds of its Renaissance heritage, making the hotel a must-visit place for both history and architecture buffs.

Walking on the other side of the front door, gusts discover a wonderland of eclectic design. The impressive collection of decorative objects, antiques and furniture represents the owners’ extensive travels across the Far East. Items from Mongolia or Tibet sit alongside ancient architectural features as well as traditional Maltese designs. All four suites have a distinctive personality and charm. Here you can find gems like hand-glazed tiles and opulent fabrics. Exposed stone walls, wooden beams, and handcrafted rugs. Elegant furniture and simple, rustic accents. Three of the four suites also provide access to outdoor spaces. These including a Zen-like terrace and balconies which overlook the city’s skyline.

Guests also have access to a tea house, where they can enjoy a cup of organic Bellocq tea along with some homemade treats. Then they can browse through the selection of accessories and furnishings in the hotel’s concept boutique store. And those who want to explore the cultural wonders of Valletta can relax knowing that the capital is just a short water taxi ride away. Images courtesy of Locanda La Gelsomina.
