Black Wooden Tables Emulate Volcanic Basalt

View all 5 Photos

Normal Studio of France recently created five geology-inspired end tables. The series, Basalt Table, is cut from a single oak trunk. Each of the pieces is made entirely of wood and charred black so that it resembles volcanic basalt. In spite of the violent process, which involves an actual blowtorch, the designs retain their natural tree rings. As fossil-like furniture, the tables represent the history, beauty, and destruction of nature.
