New York Subway 1981 by Christopher Morris

View all 15 Photos

This photoset captures the New York Subway in 1981, when photographer Christopher Morris was just twenty-two years old. His haunting photographs reveal an underworld of rusted trains with more graffiti than passengers. The people of course ride without phones in their hands. They look about the train cars, through the clouded windows, into the camera. What do they see? Newspapers littered on the floor, advertisements hanging beside Keith Haring’s art, each other. Through Morris’ lens, the city of thirty years ago seems dark, hazy even, but also fully, insistently expressive.
