The cufflink is a men’s accessory that is often overlooked in today’s fashion culture, and regrettably so – it can be the final touch that really brings a rather dashing ensemble together, kind of like the cherry on top of a brownie sundae. There was, however, a time when it wasn’t so forgotten – the mid-nineteenth century brought into fashion the musketeer’s cuff, or what we know today as the French cuff. With the French cuff being de rigueur, cufflinks became vital to the overall outfit.
Over time, and through changing fashion, the cufflink has again been relegated to the status of an afterthought, but with the recent resurgence of interest in vintage and vintage fashions, we think the cufflink should be considered again as part of all social events. Of course, one will need the proper attire – cufflinks are meant to be used with shirts which have buttonholes on both sides of the cuff but no buttons. The cuffs may be single- or double-length, and may be worn either kissing (ends pinched together), or barrel-style (ends overlapping). Needless to say, we prefer kissing…
To get you started on your cufflink collection, we’ve rounded up some fine examples of this men’s accessory:
